Vacuum skin packaging

In vacuum skin packaging (VSP), a heated top film follows the product’s contour and seals to the whole free surface of the tray. The product is held in place and clearly visible: a presentation widely used for meat, fish, seafood and high-value portions.

What skin packaging offers

Product held in the pack

The film holds the piece on the tray, so the product does not move in transport or on the shelf, and the pack can be displayed upright if the base allows.

Counter-ready presentation

The clear film shows the product’s shape and colour. That is why it is used for fish loins, prawns, steaks and premium portions.

Compatibility checks

The height of the piece, its edges, the liquid it releases and the tray material must be compatible with the skin film and the machine chamber.

Tray sealers for skin packaging

In thermoforming, the NEX-420A-U can be configured for MAP and skin with rigid film. Confirm the configuration with our team.

What we need to study your skin packaging

Product and maximum height of the piece, size and material of the tray or board, the skin film you plan to use, packs per hour and whether the machine will run standalone or in line.

Skin packaging FAQs

What is vacuum skin packaging?

A pack in which a vacuum is drawn and a heated top film follows the product like a second skin, sealing to the tray all around the piece.

What does VSP stand for?

Vacuum Skin Packaging. It appears as VSP on our tray sealer specification sheets.

What product height can it take?

It depends on the machine and the mould. On the tabletop skin sealers the chamber is 58 mm high; on semi-automatic, rotary and automatic models it is studied with the tooling for each format.

Skin or modified atmosphere?

Skin holds the product and shows it with the film shaped to it; MAP protects it with gas and leaves headspace above it. The choice depends on the product, the presentation and the shelf life you need.
